New President Announced
HGST Trustee Jack Shelton announces, “As Chair of the Board of Trustees and the Presidential Search Committee of Houston Graduate School of Theology, it is my extreme pleasure to announce the selection of Dr. James Furr as our fourth president. Our search committee received many applications for president, however, after careful consideration we were unanimous in our selection. When Dr. Furr met with the Board of Trustees, they were equally convinced that he will continue leading HGST in a positive direction.” Furr began serving on August 1 with plans for a formal inauguration sometime this Fall.
Dr. Furr comes to HGST from Houston Baptist University where he was Associate Professor of Christianity in the School of Theology, and Director of The Antioch Institute for Missional Theology. His academic career was preceded by twenty-five years of congregational leadership, training and consulting across the country. He is co-author of the popular Jossey-Bass book Leading Congregational Change: A Practical Guide for the Transformational Journey and the Leading Congregational Change Workbook.
Dr. Furr describes himself as a bridge-builder who encourages ministry practitioners to think theologically about what they do and encourages educators to address the practical implications of their training. He says, “I am honored and excited to join this dynamic learning community and believe that God will continue to guide us to make significant contributions to the lives and ministries of pastoral leaders in our community and beyond.” We look forward to his vision and leadership as the Houston Graduate School of Theology continues to discern and demonstrate God’s vision for its future.
